Gone

Well, we're definitely back in Houston, folks, and what is the most fitting symbol of that? A bulldozer.

So this morning we were greeted by the very thing, hard at work on the residence right under our western windows. It's the same roof that I blogged about awhile back, as a man removed its chimney brick by brick, while his lunch waited nearby.

Or was.

Sad. I know it has to be done, but it's still sad. Sort of like eating meat...

The reinvent, repurpose, reuse part of me hates to see houses relegated to landfill. But I know "time is money" and it is often cheaper to destroy and rebuild that it is to renovate.

By the way, did you notice the little dog sharing the workman's "office"?

I missed the dog! I hope he didn't eat the guy's lunch.

There are two very nice trees in front that I hope survive the new construction, whatever it is.

Oops! It sure looked like a little white curly haired dog sharing the cab with the heavy equipment operator. However, on closer inspection, I think the "dog" is really just the side of the operator's seat. Darn. I liked the idea that the worker had a four footed assistant. I just can't trust these old eyes anymore.

A photo of progress. It reminds me of another house being torn down. It was, imo, a historic site. The bank who bought it thought it should be a parking lot. I stood and watched and then took home as many bricks as my car would hold. The bank manager helped me load them into the trunk. He was helpful in that way. : }

I wonder what will rise up in its place.

It's been pointed out to me that the vehicle is an excavator, being used as a 'dozer. Sorry about the term.

Also, Houston specializes in the demolition of historic buildings in favor of parking lots, although the practice is not as widespread as it used to be. I've seen all but one of our family's homes (grandparents, parents and my own) demolished. (Not that I watched. I couldn't bear to watch.)

I also wonder what's coming for the site below us. There are a number of mega-mansions still being built in that neighborhood, but will they have the financing?

wow. Man buildeth and man taketh away pretty fast huh? That must have made for a charming racket all day. Did you turn the stereo up or decide to get out for a movie and errands while they did?

I split for most of the day. LH pulled up a chair and watched for a while. I feel really sorry for the people in the adjacent houses, though. All that dust.
